Overview

As database- and Internet-related applications require greater data storage, and critical operations demand minimized downtime due to backup operations, new cost-effective solutions are needed. LTO Ultrium ultra-high-capacity cartridge is such a solution. With storage capacity of up to 1.6TB (2:1 compressed; 800GB native) and data-transfer rates of 240MB/s (2:1 compressed; 120MB/s native), LTO Ultrium data cartridges serve the needs of network servers, enterprise computers, and other demanding environments. And Fujifilm’s advanced tape technologies, including its innovative servo-writing and NANOCUBIC technologies, translate into solid reliability as well as high performance.

High capacity and amazing transfer rates

FUJIFILM’s NANOCUBIC technology realized LTO G4 data cartridge to have the capacity of 1.6TB (at 2:1 compression; 800GB native) by recording 896 tracks within 12.65mm tape width. Also with the utilization of multi-channel recording technology, LTO G4 data cartridge featured transfer rates of up to 240MB/sec. (at 2:1 compression; 120MB/sec. native).

FUJIFILM Servo Technology

LTO Ultrium technology relies heavily on timing-based, high-precision servo control to achieve its remarkable performance levels. LTO Ultrium data cartridge uses dual servo tracks that have been precisely written along the entire length of each of its four data bands, for extremely fine placement control and redundancy in the event of tape damages.

Enhanced durability

NANOCUBIC technology improves the smoothness of tape-surface, which helps extend the head-lifetime and outputs high durability by the decrease of error even in rigorous use.

Encrypted For Security

LTO Gen 4 systems will introduce for the first time to midrange tape storage the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption algorithms to keep data secure. HP LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges are designed to take full advantage of LTO Ultrium technology and contain features that are exclusive to HP. HP LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges feature active internal head cleaning, self-diagnostic capacities, cartridge memory and are designed for long life and superior reliability.

In addition to HP LTO-1, LTO-2, and LTO-3 the new HP LTO-4 Ultrium Data Cartridges now offer encryption to help ensure your data is protected.

Features & benefits

With 1.6TB capacity and 240MB/sec transfer rate, HP LTO-4 Ultrium 4 RW and WORM Data Cartridges offer the highest storage capacity and backup performance of any comparable tape technology. It takes just 8.3 seconds to backup 1GB of data to a HP Ultrium 4 cartridge, compared to 12.5 seconds for Ultrium 3 and over 30 seconds for Ultrium 2.
Smoother base film and smaller magnetic particles increase the bit density, allowing more data to be recorded in the same amount of tape. This has enabled the number of recording tracks to increase from 704 for Ultrium 3, to 896 tracks for 4th generation HP LTO-4 Ultrium 1.6TB cartridges. Smoother, thinner basefilm also enables a longer tape to be packed into the same size cartridge shell, contributing to the increased capacity.
Increased margin between Early Warning End of Media (EWEOM) and End of Media (EOM), which means data on a full tape will fit on to the destination tape when copying tapes. This helps to ensure that complete data sets are maintained on single tapes without the need to span multiple cartridges in an archive, greatly simplifying the management of records and stored data.
HP Ultrium media is exhaustively qualified for use with HP and non-HP Ultrium products. A continuous testing program in HP’s media laboratory guarantees the high levels of quality uniquely specified by Hewlett-Packard. HP has 20 custom-built test chambers in use around the clock. 70,000 tests and 1.3 million test hours a year emulate real-world environmental conditions and usage. The goal of all this testing is to ensure that every tape works reliably the first and every time it is loaded into a drive.
HP warrants LTO-4 Ultrium 1.6TB RW and WORM cartridges for up to 30 years archival life and/or 260 full backups. This ensures businesses can meet the ever increasing demands of regulation for data retention and archiving.
LTO-4 tape drives will support Write Once Read Many capability, meaning that data written to tape cannot be altered or tampered with. This provides an archiving solution for the retention of compliant data that meets the requirements of SEC Rule 17a - 4(f), as well as other regulatory requirements like Sarbanes-Oxley Act. WORM media will have distinctly different cartridge colour and the write protect tab will function the same as a read-write cartridge. Although data already written cannot be altered, a WORM cartridge can be appended to full capacity over several sessions.

Large Storage Capacity and High Transfer Speeds:

LTO Ultrium ultra-high-capacity cartridge is such a solution. With storage capacity of up to 1.6TB2 (2:1 compressed; 800GB2 native) and data-transfer rates of 240MB/s (2:1 compressed; 120MB/s native), this increased performance (measured by higher transfer speeds) means less time spent on backups and archive operations, and greater overall efficiency.

WORM Media

Dell offers LTO3 and LTO4 WORM (Write Once, Read Many) media which provide a cost-effective means for storing data in non-rewriteable format to help address compliance requirements. This means once data is written to a piece of WORM media, the data on the tape cannot be changed or overwritten. WORM media can be appended to if data is already present on the tape. The media also stores unique identifiers which allow the drive to determine whether or not the media has been tampered with. WORM media offers a method of data retention for compliance laws such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Specific WORM media barcode labels will end in LT.

LTO Gen 4 systems have introduced to midrange tape storage the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption algorithms to keep data secure. The hardware-based AES 256-bit encryption capability of the new Gen 4 format offers higher level of security during storage and transporting of sensitive information.

Maxell, the technology leader in data storage and backup tape, today announces that it has begun shipping its new LTO Ultrium 4 data cartridge, which meets companies’ growing demand for storing and backing-up digital information by offering double the capacity available in LTO Ultrium 3. The Maxell LTO Ultrium 4 data cartridge incorporates new technology including data encryption and other security features for meeting government policies and regulations.

With a compressed transfer rate of up to 240MB/sec and storage capacity of up to 1.6TB, Maxell’s Ultrium 4 data cartridge is the fourth generation in the LTO Ultrium technology roadmap which extends to capacities of up to 3.2TB. The new technology provides two times the capacity of LTO 3 data cartridge and a transfer rate that is 50 percent faster. The LTO Ultrium 4 technology is backward compatible with earlier generations, allowing LTO Ultrium 4 end-users continued access to Ultrium 2 & 3 tape archives to extend their investments made in previous versions. The Maxell LTO Ultrium 4 data cartridge may be used in all 4 Ultrium drives.

New to Ultrium tape technology, the LTO Ultrium 4 format features encryption capabilities designed to enable hardware-based writing of encrypted data to the LTO Ultrium data cartridge, helping to protect the storage and transport of sensitive information. The LTO Ultrium 4 format also features the WORM (Write Once, Read Many) functionality that debuted in LTO Ultrium 3 products, allowing secure backup and storage of critical data for legal support and regulatory compliance such as Sarbanes Oxley, HIPAA and SEC 17a-4.
